Choosing an AI consultant in Hampshire: questions, red flags and a scoring sheet
How to evaluate an AI consultant: what 'near me' means for a remote-friendly service, the questions that separate a useful proposal from a vague one, and a simple scoring sheet.
Affiliated editorial resource, not an independent recommendation. It is written by Dean Keating, who publishes this directory network and offers AI business coaching. It does not rank or review other providers. Hampshire Directory draws on 13 town directories: Waterlooville, Aldershot, Petersfield, Gosport, Fareham, Horndean, Eastleigh, Hayling Island, Emsworth, Havant, Romsey, Clanfield and Cowplain. That is the extent of this site's local coverage; it is not a claim about every Hampshire town.

AI consultants near Eastleigh for small business: what "near" means
If you searched for AI consultants near Eastleigh for small business, here is a plain answer about this site's publisher. Dean Keating publishes this directory network and is based in Horndean, Hampshire. There is no Eastleigh office. Help is available remotely, and AI coaching is delivered live online to UK owners, so being in Eastleigh does not put you at a disadvantage.
For most AI work, location matters less than people assume. For an online workflow, discuss the relevant accounts and agree what can be shown before sharing a screen. Distance becomes relevant mainly when the job involves physical equipment on your premises, and for that you would agree arrangements in advance with whoever you choose.
Before you contact anyone: write a one-page brief
- Name the problem in one sentence, as a cost: "We lose Monday mornings to rewriting the same quote emails."
- List the tools involved: email provider, booking system, accounting package, Google Business Profile.
- Say who must approve the work and who owns the logins.
- Say what you will not allow, for example customer data leaving a particular system.
- Say how you will know it worked, using a number you can count yourself.
Questions that sort useful proposals from vague ones
| Ask | A useful answer sounds like | A weak answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| What exactly will exist at the end? | A named workflow, written down, with its limits | "A transformation of your business" |
| Who does the work? | Clear split between you and them | Unclear, or "our platform handles it" |
| What do you need from me? | A specific list of access and examples | "Just give us a call" |
| What could go wrong? | Specific risks and a way to switch off | "Nothing, it's AI" |
| What happens after handover? | You hold the logins and documentation | Ongoing dependence without explanation |
Consultant, coach or installer?
Three different services often get blurred together. A consultant advises and recommends. A coach guides you while you do the implementing yourself. An installer sets things up for you. Dean's own offer is coaching, in which the client implements, and installation is separate, scoped and quoted on its own. Know which one you are buying before comparing proposals, or you will compare things that are not alike.
Worked example: a fictional brief and how to read replies
Fictional example. Names and messages are invented.
Imagine "Example Kitchens Ltd", an invented firm of six people. Their brief: "Website form enquiries and phone messages are copied by hand into a spreadsheet. We want each enquiry logged once, with a suggested first reply for the office manager to approve."
Two invented replies come back. Reply A promises "AI-powered growth" and lists no deliverables. Reply B lists three deliverables, asks for ten sample enquiries with details removed, names the office manager as approver and says what it will not do. Reply B scores higher on every row of the table above, whatever the price turns out to be.
Human checks you keep
- Someone in the business reads every customer-facing draft before sending, at least during the first weeks.
- You review what data goes into any tool, and say no to what you are not comfortable sharing.
- You ask for a written list of every account the work touches.
- You check any claim a consultant makes about a product against the product's own documentation.
Acceptance checklist
- The agreed deliverable is demonstrated to you using your own sample inputs.
- You can see where a human approves before anything is sent.
- Documentation is in plain English and stored where you can reach it.
- You know how to turn it off.
- You hold, or can recover, every login.
Measuring after handover
Choose two figures you can count without the consultant's help, such as first-reply time and minutes spent logging enquiries. Record them for two weeks before and four weeks after. If neither moves, ask why before paying for more. These are your own measurements; this resource promises no outcome.
